General Course Overview:

Tower Climbing Safety and Rescue for Non-climbers is a course that is long overdue. It is designed for managers and other personnel who, in the course of their normal jobs, would have no need of actually climbing a tower, but would need to know what is, and is not, safe and correct. For nearly 14 years, we have had many calls for training of non-climbers. Just recently, ComTrain has found a great solution on how to train non-climbers about the issues faced by climbers. The answer became clear during the development of the 4th Edition of the “Tower Climbing Safety and Rescue” course.

"Something isn't looking quite right up there..."

Many managers, engineers and safety directors have need of visiting tower sites, reviewing the work being done and/or sharing space with other contractors. These individuals frequently are unsure of what they are seeing and how the workers on the site should be operating to comply with safe practices. In addition, there is an increasing inability of non-climbers to communicate with climbers. The new non-climber certification program is designed to address these issues specifically.

This program involves candidates completing an intensive two-day program in conjunction with those applying for "Tower Climbing Safety and Rescue" certification.

DAY 1:

Candidates will complete the full day of classroom training required of climbers. They will interact with the climbers and will have the additional homework assignment of developing a formal safety plan for the next day which is in the field on a tower for the climbers.

DAY 2:

Candidates will take tests right along side of the climbers in the morning, then mobilize to the live tower site. Non-climber students won't climb, but they will be dealing with all the issues normally addressed in the climbers' jobs. In the field, non-climbers will participate in the site safety meeting which includes selection and inspection of safety equipment. They will present their individual safety plans (homework) for the climbing students to evaluate and then modify, if needed, according to the program. During the field activities, non-climbers will complete a written critique and work with a Senior ComTrain instructor on evaluating the climbers and their activities.

Candidates who have

• successfully scored on the written exam
• completed an approved* pre-mobilization plan (*by a ComTrain Senior Instructor), and
• completed their field check list & critique sheets

will be 'certified' as Tower Climbing Safety & Rescue Non-climbers.

All students will receive the 4th Edition student textbook, "Soft Ropes & Capstans" Pocket Primer and a couple of other little handy-dandies.

Graduates receive documented certification, a certificate for framing and a wallet ID card.
